The Maitland Conservation Flood Forecast Centre has extended the water safety statement issued on Friday after an additional 20 mm of rain has been forecast for the region.
The statement extends to all municipalities in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds.
The conservation authority says a Colorado Low should bring rain to southern Ontario through Wednesday, and the saturated ground conditions that remain from this past weekend will respond quickly to additional runoff.
Streams and rivers are expected to reach similar levels experienced this past weekend with minor flooding in typically low-lying areas likely to occur. These elevated flow conditions will continue into the weekend. Significant flooding is not anticipated at this time.
Municipal officials are again encouraged to check drainage systems and monitor low-lying and flood prone roads. We remind people that slippery and unstable streambanks and cold-water temperatures will create hazardous conditions around all watercourses.
Maitland Conservation is monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if warranted. The statement will remain in effect until Sunday, Jan. 8.
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has also downgraded this weekend’s flood watch to a water safety statement that will extend through Friday, Jan. 6.
