The Grey Bruce Health Unit has confirmed that a bird found in the area has been tested and found positive for the West Nile Virus.

The Cooper’s Hawk was found dead in Lion’s Head and submitted for testing in late July. This is the first bird to test positive in the Region this year.

As of August 6th there have been no human cases of the mosquito borne viral disease.

The risk of contracting West Nile virus from infected mosquitos is highest in late summer, toward the end of mosquito season.

The best way to prevent it is to use insect repellent with DEET, wear light colour clothing with long sleeves, pants, socks and a hat and ensure door and window screens are securely fitted.
