For the 37th year, the Wingham Terry Fox Run is set to go on September 15th.

Joining up with the rest of the country, the Terry Fox Run gets the community out and active all while raising funds for cancer research across Canada.

Wingham’s leg of the run was originally organized by Dale and Linda Edgar and has brought in over $637,000 and now Steve Jackson and Scott Miller have taken the reins for organizing the run, both of who are testicular cancer survivors.

Miller says its with the funds raised by the Terry Fox foundation which made it simple for him to get treatment and beat cancer.

“Research funded by the Terry Fox Foundation meant that I personally didn’t have to go through chemotherapy treatment. Research showed testicular patients when its caught early enough can just sort of have cancer screening for a decade. I have now completed that cancer screening but that research meant I didn’t have to go through chemotherapy.” said Miller

Miller adds to be tied with the name of the likes of Terry Fox to help organize the annual event is something he takes great pride in.

“Back in the 80’s, trying to run across Canada on one leg… he just went out with a friend and started doing it and the momentum built, raising over $850 million from the Marathon of Hope that is unbelievable. Anytime I’m having a struggle and I think ‘man that guy tried to run across Canada on one leg with cancer coursing through his body, I can get through whatever is bugging me today’ he is an inspiration”

“He’s a hero. In my estimation he’s the greatest Canadian and I’m just proud to be a part of it in anyway I can be.”

Last year Wingham was able to raise $30,077, the 2nd time over $30,000 in 36 years and putting Wingham in the top 20 per capita for Terry Fox fundraisers in Canada.

The Wingham event will start at 11am at the Lions Park Picnic Shelter on William Street.
