A report from Huron-Perth Public Health says food insecurity is still a major problem in the area.

A family of four spent around 7 per cent more in 2023 than they did in 2022 for their grocery bills.

The report, dubbed The Real Cost of Eating: Food Insecurity in Huron and Perth is set to be brought forward at an upcoming board meeting which says families spent around $1155 per month or $267 per week on groceries last year.

This number, for a family of four receiving Ontario Works would spent 41 per cent of their income on food to meet Canada’s Food Guide recommendations.

The report notes household food insecurity is an urgent public health problem and serious human rights and social justice issue for all levels of government.
