Local healthcare in Huron County got a boost on a few fronts with announcements made in both Wingham and Goderich this morning by Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson.

“Collectively in Huron-Bruce our hospital network is receiving over $7.7 million dollars in infrastructure renewal funds. Which in some cases are really badly needed to continue to invest and demonstrate we have the best facilities possible.”

Individually the funding sees $2.6 million to South Huron, $1.01 to Goderich and Central Huron $516,055.

Also announced was operational funding for 2 of the 27 new MRI machines set for Ontario in both Wingham and Goderich.

As it is just operational funding there is still a fundraising component for the creation of the facility to house the machine and the purchase of the machine itself.

Executive Director of the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation, Kimberley Payne, explains the next steps.

“I know the build itself will be somewhere between 4 and 6 million dollars. So that is a heavy load but this community is definitely there for us.”

Dr. Shannon Natuik, Chief of Staff at the Alexandra and Marine General Hospital says the difference having an MRI in Goderich will mean.

“MRI is an important technology because it has a lot of detail that we don’t otherwise get with other forms of imaging. Bring one close to home is going to just service the community so much quicker.”
