Huron County OPP say while its not frequent, black bear sightings are still something residents can encounter when out and about.

With a return of warmer weather, OPP are providing tips when it comes to bear sightings from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

The district has a history with black bears as dispersing bears can at times enter the district of Aylmer-Guelph.

The Ministry provides two courses of action when you encounter a bear;

Emergency:

  • Enters a school yard during school hours
  • Wanders into a public gathering
  • Stalks people or lingers at the site
  • Kills livestock/pets and lingers at site
  • Enters or tries to enter a residence

In an emergency situation call 911

Non-Emergency:

  • Is in a tree
  • Roams around or checks garbage cans
  • Pulls down a bird feeder/knocks a BBQ over
  • Breaks into a shed where garbage or food is
  • Moves through a yard or field but does not linger

In a non emergency situation contact the Ministry’s BearWise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.
