A new study has found billions of litres of milk is being poured away by Canadian farmers.
From 2012-2021 around 6 billion litres of milk has been wasted, worth around $6.7 billion with some estimates saying this number could be even higher to as much as 10 billion.
The research done in part with Dalhouise University in Halifax found this has contributed to a significant land and water resource waste, around 8.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions equal to the amount of 350,000 passenger vehicles each year.
While at a cost and damage to the environment, its also at a cost to Canadians nutrition.
The report notes the discarded milk could have fed 4.2 million Canadians each year or 11 per cent of the population.
