Bruce Power has completed the delivery of the company’s largest harvest of cobalt-60, a crucial isotope used worldwide in the sterilization of billions of pieces of medical equipment and the ongoing fight against cancer.
The isotopes harvested in October were delivered to Ottawa based Nordion for processing and distribution.
The isotopes will now be shipped across the world and used to sterilize medical equipment and be used in certain breast cancer and brain tumour treatment.
The harvest marks the largest for Bruce Power since production began in the 1980s.
President of Nordion, Riaz Bandali says its the reliability of supply and Bruce Power continues to be a valuable partner in supplying cobalt-60 for nearly 40 years.
