Bruce County has unveiled the “Highway for Peace” in honour of the 160th Bruce Battalion who fought in the First World War.
Bruce County Road 19 has been designated as the Highway for Peace.
The 160th Bruce Battalion, part of the Canadian Expedition Force saw near 1200 men across Bruce County and on June 3rd, 1916 the Battalion marched 16 miles from Walkerton to Chesley on Bruce Road 19 to receive the Battalion Colours and Banner.
Later on June 12, 1916 the men left for training in England and arrived at the front in Belgium and France.
More than 100 of these soldiers are on the cenotaph across Bruce County and hundreds more returning home, their lives changed from the horrors of war.
