The Bluewater District School Board is speaking out on a plan by the province which would remove public school trustees in Ontario.
Trustees with the board approved a pair of motions from Vice-Chair Jan Johnstone to send letters to the Ombudsman of Ontario and the Minister of Education.
The school board says questions of equity are rising on the potential loss of Indigenous representation and the elimination of student trustees who are the only legislated voice for Ontario students in English public schools.
“The potential move by the provincial government to eliminate English public school trustees should deeply concern parents and community members” said Vice-Chair Johnstone.
Trustees are also asking that the review address the lack of formal public consultation citing recent polls reflecting skepticism that the proposed changes would improve public education.
