Canadian News organizations have called on Canada’s Competition Bureau to investigate Meta’s actions of blocking Canadian news content from its platforms.

The Canadian Association of Broadcasters, News Media Canada and the CBC issued in a joint statement saying they have filed an urgent request to have Meta’s abuse of its dominant position investigated.

The company announced it would begin blocking news content from its platforms (of which it owners both Facebook and Instagram) as a result of Canada’s new Online News Act (Bill C-18).

It is a law that requires tech companies such as Meta and Google to pay media outlets for news content that is shared on their platforms.

The three organizations argue the actions are a violation of the Competition Act.

Full details of the request are available below.
