The Goderich Community, and the many customers they’ve had that have travelled to the area from all around the world, were caught off guard by the recent news that the Local Business Culbert’s Bakery had been put up for sale.
Darin Culbert, who is the third generation to operate the bakery in the 80 years a Culbert has owned the business says it’s just a matter of wanting a break.
“I am two years off of being 60 and I haven’t had a summer off since I was 12 years old. It’s time for me to slow down a little bit I think.”
The Bakery traces it’s roots to the 1800s originally known as Cantland’s Bakery. It was purchased in 1906 and known as Curry’s West Street Bakery until the Culbert family purchased it in 1942 by Darin’s Grandfather Mel who eventually handed it down to his son Berry. Darin has been involved there since 1978 when he was 13.
The hotly discussed topic of whether a purchaser of the business would get the hallowed Culbert’s Recipes for the beloved treats is one that is seemingly up for discussion with Darin.
“It’s kind of up in the air. But for the most part yes. It depends on how they go about purchasing the business” Darin says coyly.
