The Goderich Fire Department is urging those with lithium batteries are taking safe care with their storage.
Lithium ion batteries should be stored with about a 50 per cent charge when not in use for long periods of time.
You should also check them every three months and make sure they haven’t lost charge and charge them back up to 50 per cent.
The batteries should be stored in an area between 5-20 degrees in a room with low humidity and keep them away from other batteries or flammable or explosive materials.
Damaged batteries can also cause internal short circuits and lead to explosion, you should dispose of them safely and not place them in household garbage.
