The Town of Goderich took the first steps in developing a new supportive housing unit at this week’s council meeting.
The four-storey apartment building has been proposed by Huron County and would offer 39 affordable units to the regions vulnerable population.
The proposed apartment would be constructed along Gibbons St. in the vacant lot south of Colbourne Public School. It would offer a mix of units including some at 80% of market rent, some geared to individual’s income and ones with supports to help people transition out of homelessness.
The town’s senior planner says the public response to the project has been largely supportive so far.
Outgoing councillor Stephen Tamming said he was proud to have this be one of this final actions.
“I always say, when we look at our community, what makes it great is not necessarily how we treat those that have the most, it’s how we treat those that are marginalized,” he said. “If I had to make one last vote in council, this would be the vote that I make and I’m grateful that it’s on this agenda.”
Council voted in favour of the official plan amendment and zoning amendment, which will now return to Huron County council for approval.
