Eight Saugeen Shores Grade 6 students will put their math skills to the test tomorrow for a good cause.

The Southampton Rotary Club’s Shop with a Cop event returns to Vanderwerf’s Independent at 1 p.m.

Four schools in the area will send two students to the store, each paired with a Saugeen Shores police officer, in order to compete and also collect items for local food banks.

Dave Bertrand, youth and vocational chair for the Southampton Rotary club explains how it works.

“Those four teams have 30 minutes to do a shopping spree at the store and the goal is to pile their cart full of items that our local food banks most need,” he says. “The team that gets closest to $150 in groceries – they cannot go over or they’re disqualified – will win a prize for their school. It promises to be an exciting, fun mathematical exercise as well as hopefully a good lesson in community service.”

Independent will also be adding $100 of groceries on behalf of the winning school, so the local bank should receive about $700 worth of food.
