Goderich’s John Cove Memorial Outdoor Rinks are ready to host skaters for the local Winterfest this weekend.

Deputy Mayor Trevor Bazinet shared the update Wednesday night that the two ice surfaces at Victoria park would be ready for families come Feb. 4.

The unseasonably warm January meant that the public rinks hadn’t been open yet this year, but Bazinet said volunteers had been working hard this week to get them ready.

“We had to drain the rinks, which we’ve never had to do before, because there was so much water inside them we weren’t getting the proper freeze,” said Bazinet. “It’s been work, there’s always something new. Just when you think you’ve got it down pat, something new happens.”

The rinks are open until 8 p.m. daily.
