Goderich triplexes address ‘missing middle’ housing in Huron County

Goderich residents wondering what the latest construction along Bennett St. is… ponder no more: the two recently poured foundations are examples of new housing options offered by Huron County.

The county is building two triplexes on the land, which they say is “missing middle” housing, higher-density options that have previously been undeserved in the area. County-owned housing is primarily apartments or single-detached dwellings, but the Goderich land provided an opportunity to shift their strategy.

“There was actually two single houses there, one experienced a fire and the other one had been vacant and used during COVID as an isolation unit,” said Denise Van Amersfoort, manager of planning for Huron County. “The opportunity came up so we decided in removing the one, we would replace it with a triplex and actually do the other one at the same time, going from two units up to six units. They are a bit smaller units, but actually the longest waitlist is for individuals looking for a one-bedroom, so this is an opportunity to sort of match our housing availabilities with the wait-list.”

The six units will be completed and ready to move in for 2023.
