Grey-Bruce Public Health marked National Drowning Prevention Week in a release this afternoon.

In it, they say that Grey-Bruce is home to countless lakes, bays, rivers, and ponds and is bordered by Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

The waterways provide ample opportunities for swimming, boating, canoeing, and fishing but they can also put children and adults at risk of water-related injuries and death.

They advise that an average of 151 people die each year from drowning. 43 percent of drownings happen at a lake or pond, 21 percent on rivers, and 12 percent in a pool.

Most of the drownings occur while swimming or power boating and the majority took place between May and September.
