Howick has approved an increase for firefighter compensation while conducting truck and equipment maintenance.

Firefighters are required to complete weekly inspections of trucks and equipment. Over the last year, the number of inspections has increased and they also take more time to finish.

Staff believe to address the changes, compensation should be increased matching the new time required to complete inspections.

A typical inspection included inventory checks, testing equipment and pump testing but recently they added in air brake testing and circle checks, driving test per manufacturer specifications and more.

The rate for firefighters has increased from $17.74 to $29.97 per instance.
