HPPH sees cases of Pertussis or Whooping Cough on the Rise

Vaccination is the best way to prevent pertussis with it part of Ontario’s vaccine schedule & given to children 2, 4, 6 and 18 months of age followed by boosters.

Huron Perth Public Health have confirmed they’ve seen cases of pertussis in Huron Perth. HPPH says in 2022 they saw 3 cases.

This year to date the count is up to 21 confirmed cases.

Pertussis is also known as the whooping cough and is a highly contagious bacterial illness.

Symptoms usually develop within 5 to 10 days after exposure to someone who has it.

It starts with mild cold-like symptoms and progresses to severe coughing and can last 2 weeks or more.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent pertussis.

It is part of Ontario’s vaccine schedule and given to children 2, 4, 6 and 18 months of age followed by boosters.
