Huron County is celebrating 50 years as a National Historic Site for the Huron Historic Gaol.

On July 5th the celebration will take place as the Historic Sites & Monuments Board of Canada declared the Gaol a National Historic Site in 1973 but it was 50 years ago in 1975 the crowd gathered to unveil the plaque to commemorate the Gaol’s official status.

To celebrate the five decades of history and community there will be a full day of activities including live music, hands on activities and a reunion of past museum staff.

Senior Curator Elizabeth French-Gibson says this milestone offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the community spirit which saved the Huron Historic Gaol and transformed it into a vibrant museum dedicated to preserving this unique local history.
