The Young Canada Week Hockey Tournament is just over a month away from taking over the Maitland Rec Complex in Goderich.

The event traces it roots back to 1950 and Mike Alcock Co-Chair of the event says it had a big reason behind its initial popularity.

“At the time there were no Pee Wee hockey tournaments in the world. Basically was a big part of lowering the age of competitive hockey in Canada, in North America, in the entire world.”

This year’s event is a return to a more traditional setup for the event. With pee week hockey tournaments becoming common place Mike speaks to how Young Canada Week has evolved.

“We’ve evolved. We still have the Pee Wee Division. We have local league and Rep divison. We have expanded it to U15 and U18 local league and rep teams.”

The event begins on March 10th and runs until March 18th.

The Opening Ceremonies on the first day will featuring banners raised to the rafters of the area from local hockey heroes from the community.

There will also be five NHL trophies on hand from 2 to 8pm that day.
