Kincardine Urging Safety Near the Water

With warmer weather bringing snow and ice melt, the Municipality of Kincardine continues to warn residents to stay away from the water.

While there still could be ice packs on the waterways, officials say even thick ice can be weak and given the temperatures of the water, hypothermia can set in quickly.

Around 35 per cent of drownings in Canada occur from October to April at times when people have no intention of going into the water.

According to the Lifesaving Society, minimum ice thickness for a single person is 4 inches while a snowmobile or ATV is 5 inches and a full vehicle being 12-15 inches.
