Meaford council has directed staff to remove the American flag flying from a municipal flagpole at Market Square.
This comes as the municipality had received multiple requests to remove the flag from the property with staff bringing a report based on the current trade relationship between both countries, related impacts on Canadian businesses and feedback from the public.
Mayor Ross Kentner says the decision wasn’t a reflection of disrespect to the American people but councils concern with current trade actions by US leadership and the impacts being felt by local sectors such as agriculture and tourism.
