While the Town of Goderich continues to reel from the Nelson Street Apartment Fire, some are being recognized for their efforts.
The blaze left 26 people un-housed but everyone was able to escape with their lives.
Victims received immediate support with the Knights of Columbus offering an emergency shelter and the Red Cross coming in as well.
Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet says if not for the efforts of neighbours, the apartment building, the story could have been much different.
“Their natural reaction was to get inside the building and start knocking on doors and getting people out. What I’ve been informed if they did not go in that building we probably wouldn’t be talking about everyone being rescued. We wanted to recognize they put their own lives at risk here to save others.” said Bazinet.
Following the blaze, the community support came in quickly with the town making an appeal for gift card donations to support the victims.
