The Town of Saugeen Shores is beginning rehabilitation work on the North Shore Trail next week.

A road closure will be part of this phase of the project, extending along North Shore Road from McVicar Street to Bushwood Lane in Port Elgin.

The plan is to place large armourstone along the water’s edge and then rebuild the slope up to the existing trail. Crews will then reconstruct a 3-metre-wide trail beside the existing road.

The Town will then apply recommendations put forward by Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) to plant native species to serve as a buffer against erosion.

To help fund the work, Saugeen Shores received a $600,000 grant to rebuild the area using leftover rock from other construction jobs, to minimize the need for brand-new quarry rock.

CAO Kara Van Myall says several years of high-water levels have taken their toll on the trail and they are creating a 50-to-100-year fix against the power of Mother Nature.

The work on this phase is expected to last until mid-to-late December. The Town has already notified nearby residents of the road closure and detours.
