Ontario education workers begin strike this morning

CUPE members are headed to the picket lines today all across the province, after the Ontario government passed legislation yesterday forcing a contract on education workers.

As part of the legislation that overrides the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, workers could be subject to fines for every day they’re on strike. The CUPE says they’re undeterred by the threats and will continue striking until members decide otherwise.

Candace Rennick, National Secretary-Treasurer tells members not to worry about the fines.

“We are giving our members clear instructions,” she says. “If you are fined on the picket line, report that fine to your president and let the union know and we will provide you with further instructions. We are in the process of seeking legal support on that. If the province of Ontario wants to clog up the justice system with $4,000 per member per day fines, then I say ‘bring it on.’ We are ready for that fight.”

Locally, the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board had to close schools today, as 41% of their staff are CUPE members. They say they’re planning to shift to remote learning on Monday should the strike continue through the weekend.

The Huron Perth Catholic School Board has also moved to remote learning today, while the Bluewater District School Board and Avon Maitland District School Board remain open.

Protests will be held in Kincardine, Blyth and Owen Sound this morning, outside local MPP offices.
