The Ontario government will attempt to pass legislation today to prevent a strike by education workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

The union provided five-day notice of job action on Sunday. Despite returning to the bargaining table yesterday afternoon, the sides remain far apart.

Citing years long-standing wage cuts and historic inflation, the CUPE is asking for annual salary increases of 11.7%. The province is countering with an offer of just 2% for workers making under $40,000 and 1.25% for everyone else.

Several school boards across Ontario have already declared they’ll need to move to online learning if education workers go on strike.
