The Ontario Provincial Police have released traffic fatality statistics on age demographics and how likely they are to buckle up.

Of the 542 who died between 2012 and 2021 in collision in which lack of a seatbelt was a factor, vehicle occupants ages 25 to 34 had the highest rate of fatalities, accounting for 24 percent of the deaths.

The 15 to 24 age bracket was the second highest group at 22.3 percent, followed by 35 to 44 year olds at 13. 5 percent.

Excuses police are given for not buckling up range from only driving a short distance, or at lower speeds, to seatbelts being uncomfortable or no longe needed because of airbags.

Huron County OPP officers will be doing their part to keep motorists safe over the East long weekend, focusing on seat belt law enforcement and education throughout the province.
