Scammers targeting locals is still continuing to be an issue, even heading into 2024.

The most common hitting people typically is the grandparent scam which targets seniors with the scammer posing as a grandchild saying they’re in jail or were in a serious accident and need money sent right away which takes away thousands from seniors as well as investment or bitcoin scams which can at times take tens of thousands.

South Bruce OPP Constable Kevin Martin says just last month alone locally paints a picture of just how much money is being lost from scams.

“December 2023 our little piece of Southern Bruce County lost nearly half a million dollars. Today in 2024 it’s still a risk.” said Martin.

Martin adds victims of scams don’t get by easily after losing money saying while police will try to get their money back it usually doesn’t work out that way.
