A local Port Elgin author is preparing to launch a book entitled “Childhood Unplugged: Practical Advice to get Kids off Screens and Find Balance” on Tuesday, July 11th.

With screens everywhere children spend an average of 7.5 hours on digital devices every day with profoundly negative consequences.

Author Katherine Johnson Martinko draws on her own family’s experience, plus interviews with digital minimalists, educators and child development experts to present analysis of the impacts of excessive screentime, specific pathways to reduce screen exposure and naturally lead to more time outdoors, increasing confidence & apathy and age-appropriate advice for fundamental change.

There is a Launch Party set for the book on Tuesday from 6 to 9 pm at Three Sheets Brewing in Port Elgin.
