The Sauble Beach Sign has now been changed to Saugeen Beach, marking the reclamation of the land by the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation.
Saugeen First Nation had for many years been fighting for the rightful recognition and return of the land which an Ontario court did rule in their favour a few years ago and was upheld last year.
The sign change was done overnight on June 30th which the Town of South Bruce Peninsula said in a statement no notice was given to the town.
The town adds while the sign is located on lands under the jurisdiction of Saugeen First Nation they are disappointed not to have been told of the decision to change the name.
Mayor Jay Kirkland says while they respect Saugeen First Nation’s right to make changes on their land, they believe open communication is important.
