The Town of Saugeen Shores approved a trial expansion of dog access to two area beaches at its Council Meeting last night.

It will see owners be able to walk their animals on leash in Southampton on-beach north of the flagpole at any time.

In Port Elgin the expansion is between a public beach access at 538 Izzard to Concession 6.

It would only be available before 9 am and after 6pm daily.

The reason for the restriction in Port Elgin says Town Chief Building Official Josh Planz.

“That area was switched to time of day so any extra traffic for dogs would be in the mornings and the evenings so it wouldn’t impact parking for beach goers.”

The trial is in place from July 1st to October 1st, 2023.

Dog owners who take their dogs onto the beaches during times permitted must have their animals on leash, and under their control and they must clean up after them.
