Firefighters on the Saugeen Shores Fire Department are now certified by the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.
The Fire Marshall has proposed that all firefighter certification in Ontario be mandatory.
This will see all firefighters be certified by the National Fire Protection Association before they are able to perform tasks at emergency responses.
The goal of the new certification is to develop a standardized approach to firefighter training, which protects firefighters and increases public safety while providing flexibility for the local needs and service levels of municipalities across Ontario.
In a news release, the Town’s Acting Fire Chief Brian Johnston says his department have embraced the proposed legislation as they have been training firefighters to their standards for many years.
