The Town of Saugeen Shores voted to support work on rejuvenating the Southampton Cenotaph.

The move was made at the recent Council Committee of the Whole Meeting.

The work will not be delayed by the planned Streetscape work planned for Downtown Southampton.

The estimated cost of the work is $250,000.

Southampton Councillor Cheryl Grace spoke to the determination in the community for the project.

“We already know the current cairn is already sinking into the ground as it is. We need to make sure, as the Deputy Mayor said, this is a legacy project, it is public land and we have a duty that is going to work and be there for 100 years or longer.”

The Cenotaph committee requested 50% of the funding from the Municipality which was approved and will look to fundraise the other 50% in the community.

The project timelines would see project consultation & design next year with construction in 2025.

They will also explore grants to help fund the project.
