The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has decided to appoint Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland to fill the vacant seat of Mayor following the resignation of Previous Mayor Garry Michi.

The options before council at yesterday’s meeting were to appoint a member of Council to fill the vacancy, to appoint any member of the public eligible to fill the seat and to hold a full by-election.

The estimated cost for the last option was around $40,000 plus the staff time involved. Council voted 3 to 1 appoint the replacement.

Councillor Caleb Hull said this to why he was the lone person to vote in support of a by-election.

“I do want to be clear by simply saying due to the length left in the tenure I believe it is best for our community to have a by-election. I see that most people, for what I am hearing, feel their conscience is leading them to a by-election and feel they are prepared to pay the cost for doing so.”

Next decision to be made by South Bruce Peninsula is how to appoint the now vacant role of Deputy Mayor.
