The Municipality of South Bruce are going to leave the decision of whether to be a host site for a deep geological repository up to its residents.

Council has directed staff to prepare for the submission of a question to voters by a way of a referendum.

The decision on a referendum was based on a report by their consultant GHD Limited that feedback they have received suggests a referendum as the preferred method.

The plan would be to hold the referendum in 2023 after the municipal elections.

The Municipality said in a news release this would give the community time to fully understand the project.

They add it will allow for a variety of studies and peer reviews to be completed.

A parcel of land near Teeswater is one of two sites (the other is Ignace in Northern Ontario) in consideration by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) to build a deep geological repository (or DGR) for the storage of used nuclear fuel.

A decision on site selection is expected to be made by the end of 2023.
