The Southampton community has lost one of its champions and the last Mayor the town had before amalgamation, Art Eby.

Eby passed away last Thursday in his 87th year.

He was born and raised in Southampton and worked for a time on the CNR railway, training with the RCMP and then chose a career in education.

He spent the most of his career teaching geography at Saugeen District Secondary School.

He was a very active member of the local Rotary Club, as well as a trustee with the Southampton United Church.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau speaks to his legacy.

“I know he was a great leader in Southampton and played a role in governing and helping to create the Town of Saugeen Shores. He really was involved heavily in our community” said Charbonneau.

The funeral service for Art is tomorrow at 11 am at the Eagleson Funeral Home in Southampton.

There will then be refreshments and fellowship in Bevan Hall at St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
