The Walk for Wenjack event will be taking place in Wiarton and Southampton later this month.

Taking place during Secret Path Week from October 17th-22nd, the event is a moment to honour Chanie Wenjack and for many others to raise awareness about the history of residential schools.

In 1966 Chanie Wenjack ran away from a residential school in Kenora, walking 36 hours along the train tracks before dying of exposure on October 22nd at just 12 years old.

His death sparked the first inquest into the treatment of Indigenous children in the residential school system.

The Walk for Wenjack will take place in Wiarton at Bluewater Park on October 18th and at the Fair Lake Pavilion in Southampton on October 21st.
