Saugeen Shores council has ended negotiations with the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce to become the independent operator of the Town’s new Aquatic and Wellness Centre.

During closed session at Monday night’s meeting, council made the decision to withdraw from a Memorandum of Understanding signed with of the Y in 2018 to negotiate an agreement to operate the facility.

In a release, council said that an agreement that works from an operational and financial standpoint cannot be reached.

“On behalf of Council, I want to thank the YMCA Owen Sound Grey Bruce Board for their efforts on this project”, said Mayor Luke Charbonneau in the release. “We look forward to our continued work together and hope to find opportunities to partner on other initiatives with the YMCA in the future.”

The town says this will not alter construction plans for the centre, with ground breaking slated to begin this summer. In the meantime, the town will explore other operating models for the facility, including a municipally-run model for the centre.
