Bayfield recently erected a new statue in honour of their namesake.
Sculpted by local Frank Moore, the limestone statue of Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield can be found in the town square which also bears his name.
Bayfield was a surveyor for the British Admiralty who prepared nautical charts of the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and waterways east of the river in the early 19th century. His charts made travelling on these waters safer and contributed to the development of early Canada.
His name was given to the Village by Baron van Tuyll who had set aside 388 acres of his land holdings for settlement around the mouth of the river.
