The Huron Chamber of Commerce of Goderich, Central and North Huron relayed an advisory from Huron Perth Public Health today about local businesses receiving calls from persons claiming to be HPPH Public Health Inspectors.

In the calls they are in some cases told they are required to immediately close their business.

HPPH wants to advise that these calls are not from Huron Perth Public Health.

They say they are committed to the health of the community. They add that Public Health Inspectors respond to and investigate complaints and concerns and when required inspect premises.

The ways to verify that a call or visit is from HPPH staff includes:

  • when contacted by telephone, make sure they identify themselves and their role and tell you why they are calling
  • Inspectors will ask questions and give further direction based on the nature of the issue or complaint received
  • Business will be given Health Unit contact information inclduing phone and/or email where they can reach the Inspector for any additional questions
  • Offer will be made to provide resources such as regulation documents, signage for business etc. as required
  • When Inspector visits the business make sure to ask for identification as all Health Unit staff have photo identification and business cards

They say if anyone receives a call or visit from a person they think may be fraudulent make sure to take their name, phone number and verify by calling Public Health at 1-888-221-2133 or emailing the Environmental Health Manager at EHResponse@hpph.ca
