The Province has proposed a new Consumer Protection Act and amended Reporting Act which aims to strengthen protections and make life easier for consumers and businesses.

The legislation targets unfair business practices such as price gouging or taking advantage of someone’s inability to understand language in a contract.

It would also update the list of examples of prohibited false, deceptive or misleading representations to expressly forbit bad practices some businesses use.

The changes would also address leasing equipment to homeowners, provide an exit for timeshares, and clarify the rules for gift cars.

Fines for such practices would also double from $50,000 thousand to $100,000 for individuals and from a quarter of a million to half a million dollars for corporations.

Full details of the proposed changes to the legislation are available at the link below.
