A referendum will be held to determine the community of South Bruce’s willingness to host the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO) used fuel storage facility, before any agreement is entered.

Local council affirmed that decision at this week’s meeting, after public consultation showed a referendum was the preferred choice for residents to weigh in whether or not the community should house the nuclear waste site.

South Bruce and the Township of Ignace are the final two sites to host the NWMO deep geological repository, and they plan to make a decision by fall of 2024.

As a result, South Bruce Council has agreed to extend the Multi-Year Funding Agreement for the site selection process to the end of December 2024.

Council approved a $2.6 million budget for continued exploration of the project next year.
