Southampton Citizen Groups speaks out to changes for Beach Access in Dog By-Law

Main issues by the group are dogs using the beach as their toilet, dogs off-leash and by-law enforcement.

The Town of Saugeen Shores Council had a citizen group make a presentation recently on the Southampton Dog Beach Test currently underway.

It seems dogs permitted on the beach in the area north of the flagpole 24-hours a day.

A member of the group, Aidan Tracey from the group offered these main issues with the By-Law since the change approved in June 2023.

“Unfortunately, if I walk down there with my phone, I was able to capture it virtually every time I walk down to the beach this summer, of a dog using the beach as a toilet. This is what you will find on the beach if you walk around and take a hard look.”

In addition to that condition the group also found issue with dogs off-leash and by-law enforcement.

Currently the group says By-Law officers are only available until 3pm daily with other times they are being instructed to call police.

The group says this action is a waste of police resources.

Both dog beach area restrictions in Port Elgin and Southampton are only in effect until October 1st.
