Toronto-resident Aleem Ramji, who tragically died attempting to save two sisters who were washed from the Pier into Lake Huron in Kincardine back in September of 2020, has been recognized as a recipient of the Carnegie Medal, North America’s highest honor for civilian heroism.

The incident back on September 3rd, 2020 saw 22-year-old Raabia K. Basaria and 16-year-old Zeanna K. Basaria washed into 8 feet of water amid treacherous conditions including large waves and strong rip currents.

A cousin in their party, 39-year-old Aleem entered the water from the pier and swam to them and held onto the 2 girls.

During the attempt, a wave unfortunately separated the three of them with the two girls being pulled from the water using a life ring & rope, but Ramji tragically drowned.
