Over 90 people gathered at Camp Klahanie last week at a welcome BBQ for Ukrainian families who have moved to Huron County.

Hosted by the Goderich Lions Club and Huron County Immigration Partnership, the event was an opportunity to meet Ukranians that have come to the area to flee the war in their home country. According to a release, at least a dozen Ukrainian families moved to Huron County since April, many of them hosted by local residents in their homes.

Don Edward, president of the Goderich Lions, said it was thrilling to see Ukrainians connect with one another and to see children play with each other, even though many of them have never met before.

The club says local fundraising efforts to support newcomers are currently underway.

John Maaskant, chair of the newcomer fundraising committee says they want to make sure there is money available for newcomers to Huron County to address gaps after all other resources are exhausted.

More details about the committee’s work are expected to be announced in September.
