Residents in Grey-Bruce are being asked to test their homes for radon, an invisible, odourless, naturally occurring radioactive gas which can build up in any home.

Andrew Barton, Senior Public Health Manager says radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer for non smokers and more smokers, exposure to high levels of radon increases their risk of lung cancer to 33 per cent.

Radon is released when uranium found in soil, rock or water breaks down and while escaping into the outdoor air becomes diluted and not a cause for concern.

Radon however can seep into homes through cracks and build up in homes and be well sealed for the Winter.

A radon test kit can be purchased from the Take Action on Radon website.
