Each year the South Bruce OPP, Huron County and Perth County OPP  participates in Fraud Prevention Month in March in effort to help raise awareness of the various kinds of fraud.

They say to remember that the goal of a fraud is to get your money.

The scammer will try to confuse  you, intimidate you, feign affection for you, all in efforts to take your money.

South Bruce Constable Kevin Martin says one type of scam common these days, the romance scam, is very difficult to deal with and investigate.

“It is so hard for a policing agency to deal with these offshore, the people overseas perpetrating these. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Romance Scam. A lot of that originates in the country of Africa. I’m not saying there is nothing we can do but please don’t give money to any these folks. The money will very likely not come back. It is hard to trace.”

The Police recommend everyone visits the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website for tips and information how to spot these types of scams, prepare for them and make sure they are eliminated as best as possible.
